Public transportation Madrid

Buses

The bus-network in Madrid is the biggest one in Spain, and one of the biggest in Europe, which is a good reason to travel by public transportation while you are in Madrid. The busses cover a huge area in Madrid, bigger than the subway does. So you maybe get not as fast at your destination when you travel by subway, but you will be able to travel a lot further than underground. The bus can take you everywhere and is quite cheap: €1, - on all fleet lines. You can buy the tickets exclusively on the busses. The bus is also transporting people at night, so you can always count on transportation.

Suburban Bus

In and around Madrid there is also a suburban bus network. This network is part of the entire bus network in Madrid. The buses travel further than normal buses, and do the same work as some trains are doing.

Subway

For public transportation in Madrid the subway is the ideal solution, it is cheap and takes you everywhere you want to go. There are a couple of cons when you travel by subway in Madrid. For example pickpockets, or purse-snatchers, they are always looking for victims in subways. If you have a handicap it’s rather difficult for you to get to every station from street level. Sometimes the subway stations have elevators but this is rare. Almost every station can be reached with a stairs only. So when you’re in a wheelchair it’s better to prepare yourself. A single trip on a subway in Madrid cost you only €1, - just like on the bus. If you spend 2 or more days in Madrid, a weekend for example, it is wise to purchase a 10-trip "MetroBus" ticket for €6.40. * For lines, directions, stops and stations look at the excel file I’ve put together.

Plane

Madrid can be reached very well if you travel by plane. The accessibility of the airports in Madrid is also really good. The airports can be reached by subway, taxi, bus and train. The main airport: Madrid-Barajas has 2 subway stations and many places where you can jump on the bus. The airport is 15 km away from the centre of the city.

Taxi´s

The taxi-network is very similar to the network of other cities. You can get a taxi everywhere, at anytime. The airport has a lot of taxi-places, which makes the travel from the city to the airport and back much easier. You can recognize the taxi’s in Madrid on the white colour with the red cross on the front doors.

Train

The train-network in Spain is called RENFE. RENFE has online a great overview of the railway and a ticket service. Inside of Madrid it is not wise to travel by train, because the train is usually used to enter the city of leave the city. If you want to travel inside Madrid it is better to use the subway or the bus. But if you want to go just outside of Madrid the best solution is taking the train or the suburban bus.
