Madrid has a good number of talents in the literary scene. Cervantes , a renowned novelist, authored the classic 17 th century novel entitled Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Federico Garcia Lorca , another local talent, is an internationally acclaimed poet and dramatist.
In Old Madrid, the literati gather in the barrio literario and drink at the prominent Café Gijon .
Ernest Hemmingway , who became a Madrid reporter during the Civil War, created two of his books in Madrid . Death in the Afternoon, which was published around 1932, was dedicated to bullfighting. His other piece called For Whom the Bell Tolls was publicized in 1940.
During the late 20 th century, numerous new talents came out into the literary scene. These artists include Adelaida Garcia Morales and Ana Maria Matute - both are feminist writers, and Camilo Jose Cela who became a Nobel Prize winner in 1989.
