The Royal Botanical Gardens were originally located at El Huerto de Migas Calientes . Founded in 1755 under Fernando VI, his main goal was to exhibit 30,000 trees and plant species, which he collected during his foreign journeys.
During the time of Carlos III, the gardens were relocated to Plaza de Murillo . The plants were then catalogued and arranged in a geometric design. The different sections of the garden are divided by avenues and each plant and tree is labeled with its species and Latin name.
The entrance of the Real Jardin Botanico is the Glorieta de Murillo , just beside the Prado Museum .
The Royal Botanical Garden is open daily from 10 am until 8 pm with a moderately priced admission fee. The nearest metro station is the Atocha.
