The Discovery Gardens were created around 1970 to honor Spain s contribution to the New World s discovery.
In 1885, the statue of Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) was designed by an artist name Jeronimo Suñol . This 56 feet and 17 meters monument was given by the Spanish nobility as a wedding present to Alfonso the twelfth.
In 1977, four other features of the garden were added -- incomparable sculptures by Joaquin Vaquero Turcios that represent elements of the Columbus journey.
Three of Turcios statues represent Santa Maria, Niña and Pinta - all of which are names of ships operated in the 1492 Columbus journey across Atlantic. The fourth monument signifies the New World.
You may visit the Discovery Gardens via the metro and going down the Colon station or via the railway Recoletos station.
