March or April

The Semana Santa or Holy Week is celebrated by numerous church services and impressive religious processions. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Sunday are all official holidays in Madrid .

During the entire Holy Week, locals parade all around the city carrying statues such as Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Some people also practice penitence and could be seen wearing robes.

Every Maundy Thursday, the Jess El Pobre or humble procession starts out from the San Pedro Church at Nuncio .
On Good Fridays, the well-known Jess Nazareno procession sets out from Basilica de Jess de Medinacelli , located at the Plaza de Jess . Another famous procession during Good Fridays is a solemn procession, with an average of 800 participants and brass bands included. The procession starts from Calle Alcal going to Puerta del Sol .

During Holy Saturdays, two processions are held. First, the Virgen Dolorosa procession, a morning event with traditional band accompaniments, set out from Basilica de Jess de Medinacelli . The second procession, held during afternoons, comes from the Monasterio del Corpus Christi located at the Plaza Congreso de Miranda .

Every Holy Week, mouthwatering sweets such as the torrijas, which are associated with these events, is sold all over the city.
