August

On the sixth up to fifteenth of August, the Verbena de la Paloma or the Virgin of the Paloma Festival is held at the La Latina area. This event includes many of Madrid s most popular traditions. During evenings, the nightclubs and bars are filled with people where free live concerts are held.

During daytime, performances of Madrid traditional dances, with complete folkloric costumes, are put on. The most amusing feature of this event is that majority of the city displays a village-like atmosphere.

On August 15, which is a Spanish national holiday, a statue of the Virgin Mary is paraded all throughout the streets of Madrid . People line the streets up as they cry aloud with the words Guapa! - meaning, beautiful. The festival is concluded with an impressive fireworks show.
